Coming Soon: New Makerspaces and creative spaces in Furtwangen, Tuttlingen and VS-Schwenningen.
You have an idea for a new product, an innovative service, the solution to a problem or an ingenious (technical) invention? You want to develop it further into an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) or prototype / demonstrator? Then our new Makerspaces and creative spaces in Furtwangen, Tuttlingen and VS-Schwenningen are just right for you! As part of the BMBF-funded project startUPspace@HFU, we are actively supporting you/you on the path to realizing this idea.
Starting in the fall of 2021, all members of Furtwangen University (students, professors, employees) can develop, test, and implement ideas and initial prototypes in the Makerspaces. You will be accompanied by the staff of the HFU startup consulting service startUPcampus@HFU or the project startUPspace@HFU.
The technical orientation of the new premises is based on the individual faculties of the respective university locations. Thus, at the Tuttlingen location (in the IFC, Katharinenstr. 2), a makerspace with the orientation “physical prototyping” (with the sub-areas of mechanics, electronics and additive manufacturing) and a makerspace with the orientation “user experience” – as well as a new creative space – are being created. In the M-Bau in Furtwangen (Hafnergässle 3), the “Virtual Prototyping” lab is being built with the Game Design Area, VR and Additive Manufacturing, as well as a new creative space. In the new start-up and creative center “DIE HALLE” in VS-Schwenningen (Lichtensteinstr. 6), HFU will also provide a new creative space.
Currently, all startUPcampus staff members are working on setting up the Makerspaces and creative spaces and completing the new infrastructure for the startUPspace@HFU. It is expected that things will really get going in the fall of 2021, and we are very much looking forward to the startup spirit moving into the new, well-equipped premises!
Idea promotion & coaching worth up to 7,500 Euros.
*** Current application period: October 1, 2021 – November 7, 2021 ***
What is KickStart@HFU?
Furtwangen University promotes inventive and entrepreneurial spirit and has launched KickStart@HFU, a funding program that starts at a very early stage of a potential start-up – during the development of ideas or prototypes. Within the framework of KickStart@HFU, we support innovative (business) ideas (in cooperation with the BMBF – Federal Ministry of Education and Research) with up to 7,500 euros per applicant/team. This phase is not yet about founding a company, but about further developing an idea into an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) or prototype / demonstrator in the run-up to a potential start-up. If you have an idea – for a new product, an innovative service, the solution to a problem or an ingenious (technical) invention – and would like to develop it further, then apply now!
Who is eligible for funding?
The funding program is aimed at all members of Furtwangen University (students, professors, employees) at all locations. Individuals or teams can apply. The funding refers explicitly to the pre-founding phase of the potential founders. The company must not have been founded yet.
What is funded?
Funding is available for innovative (technology-oriented) ideas with development and growth potential as well as innovative services with high customer benefits that are expected to have unique selling points on the market. The funding includes consulting and non-cash benefits worth up to €7,500 per applicant/team. In addition to financial support, the winners can expect an individual consulting program on the way to a possible start-up as well as access to the services of the HFU start-up consulting startUPcampus, such as makerspaces and creative spaces.
In general, funds to cover the living expenses of the applicants or expenses for personnel are NOT eligible for funding. Also ineligible are expenses for material or consulting services that are already available to all members of the university as general and freely accessible infrastructure. Priority should be given to the use of resources already available at HFU (e.g. creative spaces, makerspaces, laboratories, free consulting services provided by the HFU startup consulting service startUPcampus, computer rooms, technical rooms, etc.).
How can I apply?
Applications for the next round of KickStart@HFU are open until November 7, 2021!
Apply by sending the completed application form (i.e. including the list of required financial resources and the attachment for each team member) and, if applicable, a professorial letter of recommendation (optional) to: email@example.com
All applications are first subjected to a formal review (are all required contents present?). This is followed by a qualitative review by the KickStart@HFU team (is it an innovative idea that can be tested within six months?).
The selected teams or individuals will receive an invitation to pitch (approx. 10 minutes) in front of an independent jury of representatives:inside Furtwangen University and external experts. The pitches will take place at the end of November 2021 (in presence or online – depending on the current situation).
Decisive criteria for the evaluation are innovation content & USP, feasibility, market opportunities, motivation & team composition as well as the plausibility of the planned expenditure within the funding program.
The following points should be considered in the pitch:
Introduce yourself as a person / team and describe your motivation for your idea (motivation & team composition).
Describe your product / service (functionality & innovation content)
What problem does it solve / what customer need is satisfied? (Customer Need & Market Potential)
What is the USP? (What can your product / service do that existing solutions cannot?)
What will the requested funding be used for (list of required financial resources)?
What is your roadmap for the prototype phase (milestone planning)?
Acceptances and rejections will be made promptly and are subject to the approval of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
After approval, you have six months to develop your prototype. During this time, you can take advantage of coaching by the HFU startup consulting service startUPcampus. At the end of the funding period, each team shows what it has been able to achieve in a final presentation.
